There are many ways of enjoying this moderate climate. The diversity of the ecosystems allows you to carry out a variety of leisure activities.
Camping, rural tourism, mountain biking, hill walking.. Some of the most interesting routes are:
Alhamilla Sierra: located between Níjar and the Tabernas Desert. It is reached from the N-340 road. The woods of holm oak intermingled with reforested pine trees contribute to the richness of the scenery in the area.
Natural Karst Landscape in Gypsum: located in the municipality of Sorbas, it is the most important Karst area in the world. It is very deep, and the contrasts in colour also appear underground, where the darkness is set against the white columns, crystalloids, corals, stalactites, stalagmites of gypsum. The cave has over 8 kms of galleries, most of which are unexplored.
Mini-Hollywood Cowboy town:in the Tabernas desert, the Mini-Hollywood cowboy town has been the scene or countless westerns. In this desert scenery, the sun plays with the shapes of the chasms at different times of the day. We would therefore recommend a 24 hour visit, to witness the constantly changing natural spectacle.
Vera: a town with a great historic tradition. It has some important monuments such as the 16C Iglesia de la Encarnación (Church of the Incarnation), the 16C Church of St Agustin.
Cabo de Gata Nature Park - Níjar :a Nature Reserve with a climate close to the West African climate. Due to this, the thicket is the predominant vegetation, and one of the most important species is the Palm Heart, the only native palm tree in Europe and which is the symbol of the Nature Park. It is also renowned for the diversity of its fauna since, due to its strategic location, its salt pans are used as a stopping place for birds migrating from different points in Europe. Amongst them are Flamencos and Sea Gulls.
WATER SPORTS
Sailing and diving are amongst the sports that can be practised along the Mediterranean coast, on the beaches of Vera, La Garrucha and Mojácar. The beauty and richness of these beaches, together with the excellent weather enjoyed all year round, make them ideal places for enjoying these activities to the full.
FESTIVALS
Tradition is also an element of the Valle del Este, reflected in the variety of festivals held in the nearby towns. One of the most characteristic festivals is the celebration of Easter.
In Vera, the principal festival is the pilgrimage to the Virgin of the Huerta. This has been held on the first Sunday in September since 1570. It was originally a harvest thanksgiving festival. The Day of the Vieja (Old Lady) is also important, held on the Maundy Thursday, a farming rite relating to fertility and fecundity.
In Sorbas, the main festival is held on 16th August in honour of its patron saint, St Roque, culminating in the festival of "St Roquillo" on 17th August.
In Mojácar, the most original activity relates to the invocations or "Retorneás", of Jewish origin. During the festival in honour of the patron saint, St Agustín, held on 28th August, the Ribbon Race is renowned, as is the representation of the Moors and Christians, to commemorate the pacific handing over of the keys of the city to the Catholic Kings.
In Garrucha, the traditional festival is the Virgin of Carmen, held on 16th July. It is an emotional one, due to the zeal shown by the local people. The festival in honour of the patron saint, St Joaquín, and Nuestra Señora de la Asunción (Our Lady of the Assumption) are held from 14th to 17th August.
GASTRONOMY
The variety of local traditions are reflected in the varied gastronomy of the different towns located around the Valle del Este. Much of the gastronomy is a legacy from the past.
Amongst the most typical dishes are: From Vera, the "Tortas de Avío" and "Gurullos con Conejo" and for confectionery, "Hornazos" "Torticas Reales"... ; from Garrucha, the red prawn, "Garruchero" rice, broth, "Galanes", fried fish dish and grilled sea food...
